CHURCH ASKS SONIA TO EXAMINE KERALA AFFAIRS

The Catholic Church in Kerala has asked Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi to rein in the “arrogant” leaders of her party in the State who have allegedly been hurting its sentiments by sidelining it and demanding fair treatment.
In a toughly worded letter sent to Sonia and Rahul, the Catholic Church’s Thrissur Archbishop, Mar Andrews Thazhath, has told them that the Congress should not believe that the Catholics would always vote for it. The letter asked the Congress leaders to take note of the fact that the political equations in Kerala were changing fast.
Mar Thazhath reminded Sonia of the defeat of the Congress candidates in Kerala’s Thrissur, Chalakkudy and Idukki Lok Sabha seats, where the Catholics were present in large numbers. This was an indication of how the political situation in Kerala was changing and a warning signal to the Congress party, he said.
Despite this, the Archbishop said that the Church had not yet lost its trust in the Congress but the party’s set up in Kerala was ineffective presently.
Certain arrogant Congress leaders, whose statements had hurt the feelings of the faithful of the Church, needed to be reined in, said the letter, a copy of which was also sent to Mukul Wasnik, general secretary in charge of Kerala.
The letter, which complained that the Congress-led UDF Government in Kerala had adopted a policy of neglect towards the Church, unleashed an attack against the Muslim League, Congress’s closest ally in the UDF, also. The Church called for immediate intervention by the national leadership to end the problems in the State Congress’s approach to it.
In an obvious reference to the Muslim League whose Minister PK Abdurabb is holding the Education portfolio, the letter said that certain forces were handling the public education sector as their private property and that the administration of the State’s universities was in the hands of certain communities.
The letter, which asked Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi to remember the great contributions made by the Catholic Church to Kerala’s education and health sectors, complained that these contributions had been sidelined now.
This is the first time the Catholic Church has resorted to such a move with regard to the Congress and the UDF in the recent times.
Observers are of the opinion that the Archbishop’s letter is a clear indication of a new conviction among a section of the Catholic Church, which has always been considered as a friend of the Congress, of the need to rethink its political leanings.
The Congress candidates’ defeat in Idukki and Thrissur Lok Sabha constituencies was seen as a proof of this shift in the Church’s thinking.
The Catholic Church, which looks after the interests of the settler farmers in Kerala’s high regions, had got into a direct confrontation with the Congress and the UDF over the issue of the Madhav Gadgil and K Kasturirangan committees’ proposals to protect the Western Ghats which, according to the Church, could lead to the eviction of lakhs of farmers from their farmlands.
The Church was also irked by the alleged disparity in the recent allotment of Plus II batches in schools.
There are complaints that several schools, including some of the reputed institutions managed by the Church, were not allotted the batches despite their demand whereas many others had got batches though they did not deserve the allotment.
